Hamburger steaks with onion gravy
An easy-to-make classic that features delicious hamburger “steaks” dipped in broth and onions. Traditionally served with hot white rice or potatoes, it’s a great way to garnish a pound of ground beef and probably have all the ingredients on hand!
This is the perfect easy dinner when you want something a little more luxurious than burgers, but more than just a steak.
I was struggling with what I could make for dinner with ground beef that the whole family loves. This does the trick every time!
I even learned a chef-inspired secret about extra-juicy pancakes (nobody likes brick meat!). I approached it differently than I would if I were to make meatloaf, diced meat, or Salisbury steak, because I wanted it to be true to its name: “hamburger” steak. Read on!
Hamburger steak consists of simple ingredients similar to the way hamburger is made. In this case, it is served with broth on top of mashed potatoes. It can be served with cake if you prefer.
Salisbury Steak often includes an egg, which is used as a binder, along with breadcrumbs, milk, and other ingredients. Basically an individual size meatloaf. (Try these Salisbury Steak or Cube Steak recipes next!)
Incorporating butter into meat is a chef’s secret to keeping pancakes nice and juicy. When meat is cooked, the proteins contract and contract, thereby leaching out moisture.
This can result in hard pieces of meat. The butter in the pancakes evaporates as they cook, which helps keep the protein moist.
